There’s the story of a fellow from the big city who decided to wonder off into the world alone. He visited the Hveravellir geothermal area on the Kjölur mountain road and took a hike around the area. Several hours later he had to be transported back to town after nearly having a nervous breakdown. The unfamiliar stillness was so overwhelming that for a while he had convinced himself he was alone in the world. 
Fortunately this is not how most people respond, but it just goes to show that for such a small country, much of the open landscape remains untouched by mankind apart from hikers, Icelandic sheep and the occasional bird.
